Mike Rounds perpetuates conspiracy & shifts blame.

Updated: Jun 24, 2020

In Mike Rounds' weekly column, he perpetuates the president's unsubstanciated claims that Covid-19 is manmade and China intentially released this virus. He claims that there is overwhelming evidence that it was released by the Wuhan lab. Two sentences later, he backtracks a bit and says it may have been released accidentally. The U.S. Director of National Intelligence has rejected that Covid-19 started in a lab and has concluded the virus was "not manmade or genetically modified." Rounds goes on to say China was more concerned with surpressing information and running a public relations campaign to save face and protect its economy. That sounds really familiar... “We have it totally under control." ... "It’s one person coming in from China, and we have it under control. It’s going to be just fine.” -Pres. Trump Jan. 23rd, 2020. "The Coronavirus is very much under control in the USA. We are in contact with everyone and all relevant countries. CDC & World Health have been working hard and very smart. Stock Market starting to look very good to me!" -Pres. Trump Feb. 24th, 2020. Rounds states that according to a University of Southampton England study, Covid-19 cases could have been reduced 95% had China responded three weeks earlier. The same could be said about our government's response. The Institute for Health Metrics and Evaluation at the University of Washington concluded that had the White House instituted the social distancing guidelines two weeks earlier the effect would have been substantial. If they had done it only a week earlier on March 9th, it would have resulted in a 60% decrease in U.S. deaths. On March 6th, President Trump stated, "Anybody that wants a test can get a test." As of March 7th, South Dakota had the ability to test only 1,900 people. By March 18th South Dakota labs had run out of supplies to process these tests. There is plenty of blame to go around. The question is...what did we learn from this pandemic and will we change? Our leadership has been less than honest and has failed to speak up on behalf of hardworking South Dakotans. We need leaders interested in solving today's problems and not shifting blame to win an election. It's time for a change and only you can make it happen.
